Congratulations on your new arrival!! Basking in the glow of new motherhood isn't always everything that the parenting magazines would have us believe. Even if you were blessed enough not to have a tear or episiotomy, "down there" can be downright painful for the first few days. Your first bath after giving birth is an exceptionally important event for both you and your new baby and can be a wonderfully relaxing time the two of you bond and heal after the monumentally powerful experience of birthing a child.
After working closely with midwives and doulas, I used a selection of potent, yet gentle herbs to create a completely organic herbal blend designed to soothe and heal when used in the early postpartum period. Good hygiene helps to prevent infection and, in addition to that, the herbs chosen can also prevent postpartum hemorrhaging as well as helping to ease pain and promote healing to the perineal area. It also helps ease swelling of traumatized perineal and vaginal tissues.
In addition, these herbs can help heal your new baby's umbilicus, once the cord has fallen off.
❦ BATHING WITH YOUR NEW BABY CAN BE A BEAUTIFUL AND RELAXING EXPERIENCE FOR BOTH OF YOU. ❦
Place ¼ cup of the herbal blend (use more or less as your comfort level dictates) in a pot of fresh, cold water and bring to a boil. Reduce to a simmer, cover and decoct for 10 minutes then remove from heat and let sit overnight (or 6 – 8 hours). Strain and pour the decoction into a peri-bottle, shallow basin, or bath.
If used in a bath, simply relax for at least 10-15 minutes, with your sweet bundle of love resting on your chest.
You may also wish to pour on to pads, freeze them, and wear when you are able to move around, but are still in need of healing and pain relief.
